Holiday Fundraising and Donation Processing Intern

New York, United States Part-time

About GiveDirectly:

GiveDirectly (GD) aims to reshape international giving -  and millions of lives - by allowing donors to provide capital grants directly to the world’s poorest. The Brookings Institution estimates that $70B of cash transfers would be required to eliminate the poverty gap; the aid sector currently spends $135B each year, much of which is spent on evidence-free interventions. GiveDirectly wants to change that, establishing a benchmark as Vanguard did for the financial industry (i.e., index fund), and in the process accelerate the end of extreme poverty.

GiveDirectly has raised over $250M in revenue and reached nearly 150,000 households, while being recognized as one of the most innovative non-profit companies by Fast Company. The New York Times Magazine writes, “The beautiful thing about GiveDirectly’s approach is that it lets people devise their own path out of poverty.” The growing movement toward cash transfers and GD’s role in that movement have also been featured in This American Life, Foreign Affairs, The Economist, and  Business Insider.

We’re looking for exceptional talent to grow GiveDirectly and the broader cash movement. Our culture is direct, analytical, non-hierarchical, fast-paced, transparent, and hard working. We are open to candidates from any industry and typically recruit from top organizations - members of our team have come to us from private-sector companies (consultancies, law firms, investment banks, etc.), start-ups, and government. We value ability and willingness to learn over years of experience.

Overview:

We are seeking a paid fundraising intern to help accelerate the work of GiveDirectly’s Growth team during our busiest season: the holidays. This internship will run from November 1, 2019 to January 31, 2020, with the possibility for extension dependent on performance.

As the Fundraising and Donation Processing Intern, you’ll be a crucial part of our fundraising team, focusing in three core verticals:

  1. Donation processing (70% of time): Ensuring data on offline donations are accurately entered into GiveDirectly’s fundraising database.
  2. Media monitoring (15% of time): Working with our Communications Manager to research journalists and help identify potential channels to pitch.
  3. Social media posting (15% of time): Working with our Growth Marketing Manager to identify exceptional, one-of-a-kind content to post to GD’s social channels that drives awareness for direct giving.

You’ll work as a member of the Growth team, reporting to the Head of Growth. Your work will be crucial to our ability to fundraise during the holiday season, and will provide you insight into the operations of customer relations and marketing at an NGO.

You are:

  1. Incredibly detail-oriented
  2. Quick to learn new skill sets and processes
  3. Interested in learning about press and social media
  4. Available 20 - 30 hours per week, November 1 to January 31.
    1. This will include major holiday weeks.
    2. GiveDirectly holidays include Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve. The person filling this role will also be able to take 3 additional unpaid vacation days across this time.
