Background: GiveDirectly is driving a re-evaluation of the assumptions underlying international philanthropy with a provocative model: we deliver cash donations directly to the extremely poor and let them decide what to do with them. This approach builds on two converging trends: the rapid spread of electronic last-mile payments solutions in the emerging markets, and the large body of experimental evidence showing that direct cash transfers are as or more cost-effective at reducing poverty than more traditional, top-down approaches.

Overview:  The Associate Field Manager will manage the Field Officers (FOs) on one of our field-based recipient enrollment teams. The individual in this position will own day-to-day management of his/her team, including daily work planning and team management; tracking team and individual performance; achieving targets.


  • Track FO productivity & quality of service, including compiling and reviewing operational reports each week; discuss the team and individual performance weekly with FOs and Field Manager (FM); own course correction if metrics are slipping.
  • Keep senior management informed of key risks to work plan (e.g. area-specific challenges, political instability, rumours about GiveDirectly, recipient refusals, terrain challenges during rainy seasons, etc.).
  • Vet new versions of surveys, including the impact on field staff productivity, and recommend survey improvements as necessary (e.g. potential process gaps).
  • Raise ideas for continuous improvement to the enrollment process and recipient experience; execute process improvements and ideas raised by the Field Manager or Country Director.
  • Periodically check and review FO data collection in the field. Coach staff to correct any issues observed.
  • Spend 1-2 day resolving difficult cases in the field that require special attention (hard-to-find recipients, cases of potential fraud)
  • Spend 1-2 days a week shadowing staff in order to identify areas for improvement and professional development, particularly during staff training.
  • Conduct monthly and quarterly performance check-ins with direct reports and support HRM drive field staff semi-annual performance reviews.
  • Participate in meetings with the district, county, and sub-country officials as necessary. Represent GiveDirectly in the field and manage daily communication with the local village and parish leaders.
  • Assist Country Director and Field Manager with hosting journalists, donors, and other external parties.
  • Assist management with communicating and executing new projects, pilots, systems or processes and technologies (e.g. software changes and upgrades, recipient targeting projects, content collection for the website and mobile app, etc.).
  • Ensure all allowance requests and spent allowance requests are submitted correctly and promptly
  • Ensure timecards are accurately submitted in a timely fashion.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The Associate Field Manager will play a critical day-to-day role in delivering Give Directly’s gold-standard cash transfer product to donors and recipients. For that reason, the suitable candidate for this position will:

  • Fluency in English and Swahili. Ability to speak Juba Arabic, Luo, Runyoro will be an added advantage
  • Excellent overall communication skills,
  • Exceptional leadership ability with demonstrated success in motivating and developing junior staff,
  • Exceptional ability to problem-solve complex operational challenges in the field,

  • Analytical and technical skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Excel.


  • Diploma or Degree in a relevant field from a credible academic institution.
