About GiveDirectly:

What if, instead of telling poor families what they need, we gave them money and let them decide for themselves? GiveDirectly is asking this question, and in the process aiming to reshape the ~150 billion dollar international aid industry. Our approach uses a simple and provocative tool: direct, unconditional cash transfers to the poorest people on the planet. Cash transfers are backed by rigorous data (dozens of studies show impact on the world’s most vulnerable populations) and disrupt the traditional charity paradigm by placing decision-making power in the hands of recipients. We are building a conversation around putting evidence and choice at the center of giving, with the poor themselves - not donors - writing the narrative.

As one of the fastest-growing international non-profits, we have scaled our end-to-end platform to send cash to hundreds of thousands of individuals. Our unorthodox approach has driven debate in press and policy circles (e.g., NPR’s This American Life, Foreign Affairs, The Economist, New York Times, The Guardian) and allied us with key thought leaders in the philanthropy space (Google.org, GiveWell, Fast Company).

We are growing our brand and platform by recruiting exceptional talent. Our culture is blunt, analytical, non-hierarchical, fast-paced, and transparent, and we’re looking for people that match that description. We are open to candidates from any industry; we typically recruit from top firms and offer competitive salary and benefits.

Role overview:

As GiveDirectly’s Content Lead you’ll own all our words from thought leadership pieces to customer education content, marketing emails, and website copy. You’ll work closely with our senior team to refine our voice and to produce original content across a wide range of channels that maximizes engagement from our partners, the media, and the broader public.

  • You’re a world-class writer — you understand what an audience wants to read and you know how to write it
  • You like to tell stories and are interested in our work (though you need not be an expert)
  • You can take an outline of a narrative and turn it into a finished product with minimal guidance
  • You want to be a doer in the short term and a leader in the middle to long term

Responsibilities:

  • Continually refine our content strategy and voice to advance our brand and drive audience growth
  • Produce best-in-class written materials for our website, emails, blog, press releases, think pieces, social channels, grant proposals, concept notes, speeches, and more
  • Work with a design team to produce high-quality presentations for speaking engagements and other events
  • Support and reinforce GiveDirectly’s growing reputation as a thought leader in the charity ecosystem
  • Maintain a database of evidence, case studies, and other marketing collateral for outreach to donors, partners, and the media

We are looking for people with:

  • A track-record of excellent written material across a range of voices
  • A natural curiosity for how things work and are related to each other that will lead them to become an expert in our industry over time
  • A preference for a fast-paced, start-up work environment where direct, honest feedback is the norm
